Organisers of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will import sand from Brisbane for the multi-sport event's beach volleyball competition after sand on the Coolangatta Beachfront was deemed "too fine".

The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) made the judgement, which means tonnes of coarser sand will have to be transported across to the Gold Coast.

Gold Coast 2018 organisers claim negotiations to arrange the sand delivery are underway and also state that the FIVB’s decision is not a rare one.

"A similar requirement existed for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games competition where the sand at Copacabana Beach required a coarser mix to comply with the competition standards," a Gold Coast 2018 spokesman told AAP.

When contacted by insidethegames regarding the matter, Gold Coast 2018 deputy chief executive Brian Nourse said: "Whilst the sand at Coolangatta Beach is pristine, it has been determined by the International Volleyball Federation as being too fine to meet the specific technical requirements necessary for the Gold Coast 2018 beach volleyball competition.

"The advice from the FIVB is that the sand at Coolangatta and surrounds is so fine that it requires a mix of coarseness to ensure that the athletes have a safe playing surface consistent with the requirements of the Federation.

"That is why arrangements are currently underway to secure a coarser sand - approximately 1,000 to 1,200 tonnes for the competition and warm-up courts and an additional 500 to 520 tonnes for the Runaway Bay training courts.

"Gold Coast 2018 has assessed that there are potential suppliers of the sand in the Brisbane, the Gold Coast and wider South East Queensland region and negotiations for supply are continuing."

He added: "Nothing has been signed yet with any of the suppliers, but the sand will be coming from our region.

"Through these arrangements, we will provide the best and safest playing surfaces to meet the necessary international standards for the best beach volleyball athletes of the Commonwealth."

Beach volleyball was added to the Games programme after an agreement was struck between the Commonwealth Games Federation, the Queensland Government, the Australian Commonwealth Games Association and Gold Coast 2018.

Two 12-team tournaments will be contested, one each for men and women, with two players per team.

Tickets for the beach volleyball competition have already sold out.

Construction on the 4,000-capacity show court and precinct is scheduled to start in January.

Gold Coast 2018 is due to take place from April 4 to 15.

Beach volleyball action is scheduled to run from April 6 to 12.
