The Sambo Federation of Kyrgyz Republic and the International Sambo Federation (FIAS) have made respective pledges to improve gender equality in the sport, with the International Federation aiming to include women's combat sambo to its programmes in future.

FIAS President Vasily Shestakov said in a press conference that this decision "was under discussion" with the Executive Committee.

"We delivered testing during the last two years at continental events in particular the Pan American Championships," said Shestakov.

"We are going to include female combat sambo into the World Championships in upcoming years, it is important to keep the equality of the sport.

"That is part of the Olympic Agenda.

"Given that this is new, we will continue developing it.

"National teams are not ready yet to provide teams.

"Combat sambo will be progressing step-by-step."

The International Olympic Committee requires gender equity from International Federations who wish to participate in the Olympic Games, with FIAS hoping to make the cut in future after failing to do so for Los Angeles 2028.

At the 2022 World Sambo Championships, there are seven categories for women and 14 for men.

Women so far are only competing in sport sambo, more related to mat-based martial arts, while combat sambo is similar to mixed martial arts.

The Sambo Federation of Kyrgyz Republic President Aziz Ibraev said plans were in place to make the women's national team as successful as the men's.

His comments came hours before the nation won its first sambo world title in five years, thanks to the efforts of Daiyrbek Kariyaev in the men's combat under-79kg tournament.

"We were working with the FIAS Executive Committee Athletics Committee chair Yelena Bondareva," said Ibraev.

"She was running two masterclasses to improve the development of women and we took the pathway of wrestling to increase women's participation."

Kyrygzstan's hopes of more gold medals continue tomorrow, having won a gold medal on both days of the Championships so far.
