Mexico manager Juan Carlos Osorio will miss the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football Gold Cup after he was banned for six matches by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.

The 56-year-old was found to have used "insulting" words towards match officials during his side's defeat to Portugal in the third-place play-off at the Confederations Cup in Russia on July 2.

He has also been fined CHF5,000 (£4,000/$5,200/€4,500) for his actions.

Osario was protesting against a controversial decision in Mexico's 2-1 loss to Portugal after referee Fahad Al Mirdasi failed to award his team a penalty.

He will not be able to take charge of defending champions Mexico at the Gold Cup as a result of the decision of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.

Mexico could play up to six matches at the tournament in the United States, which began yesterday, if they reach the final.

Should Mexico play fewer than six games at the Gold Cup, Osario's suspension will carry over into their next international matches.

In a statement, FIFA said the punishment was handed out to the Mexican manager, who was appointed in 2015, due to the "gravity" of the incident.

"After taking into account all circumstances of the case, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has decided that Mr Osorio is regarded as having breached article 49.1 a) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code," FIFA said.

"As a result, and given the gravity of the incident, Mr Osorio is to be suspended for six official matches and has also been sanctioned with a warning and a fine of CHF 5,000.

"The decision, which has been duly notified today, comes into force immediately."

Mexico, whose triumph in 2015 gave them a record seventh title, have been drawn in Group C at the Gold Cup, along with Jamaica, Curaçao and El Salvador.

They begin their campaign at the tournament against El Salvador in San Diego tomorrow.
