Gold Coast_2018_Surfers_Paradise_Closing_CeremonyNovember 20 - Surfers Paradise could host the Closing Ceremony of the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, it has been revealed.

Gold Coast City Mayor Ron Clarke and Queensland Premier Anna Bligh have reportedly already discussed the idea of moving the Ceremony from Metricon Stadium to one of the world's most famous beaches with officials from the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).

The plan, which has the support of Sam Coffa, the the President of the Australian Commonwealth Games Association, would mean that up to 80,000 people could witness what is set to be a spectacular event.

The idea is still subject to feasibility and logistical studies but would be the first time a closing ceremony of a modern Olympic or Commonwealth Games had been held on a beach, the Gold Coast Bulletin reported.

"I couldn't think of a better way to finish," said Clarke.

Bligh claimed that holding the Closing Ceremony on the beach at Surfers Paradise would capture the mood of the Games.

"The Organising Committee, along with the Commonwealth Games Federation, will ultimately make the decision about where the opening and closing ceremonies will be held," Bligh told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

"The Gold Coast is spoilt for choice when it comes to great locations, and the beach would certainly be spectacular."
