Chad le Clos is reportedly considering paying for team-mates to attend the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games to enable him the chance to equal the all-time record for medals at the multi-sport event.

The South African swimmer currently boasts 12 Commonwealth Games medals in his career, which came from Delhi 2010 and Glasgow 2014.

His tally includes four gold medals, as well as two silvers and six bronze.

Le Clos is currently six medals shy of the record held by shooters Mick Gault of England and Australia's Phillip Adams, who have 18 medals each.

The South African had hoped to compete in seven events at the Games, which would offer the chance at the all-time record should he medal in each.

The 25-year-old's hopes would rest upon success in relay events, but a couple of team-mates have missed selection.

It follows them missing the KZNA Provincial Championships in December, which swimmers were required to participate in to be eligible for the Games.

A total of 29 swimmers achieved qualifying times at the event, but Le Clos states several team-mates who would benefit the team were unable to make the trials.

Le Clos told Times Live that it would be "sad" if South Africa did not take their best team, asserting that they are medal contenders in the relay events.

"There were guys who weren't selected for the team which I'm pretty upset about‚" he said.

"I don't want to mention any names, there were some guys I asked to go on the team.

"Some of the guys couldn't make trials because they were studying overseas.

"Everyone's always about the medals‚ they always want to talk about the medals and the performances‚ but now when we have the opportunity...

"I'll even go as far to say I'll raise the money‚ I'll pay for them to come.

"I've spoken to them, they're happy to stay outside the Village, they'd be happy to compete in just the relays."

Six of the swimmer's medals at the Commonwealth Games have come in relay events.

It is claimed that South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee President Gideon Sam is set to assess the selection dispute.

South Africa finished seventh on the medals table at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, having secured 13 golds.

Of their total of 40 medals at the Games, 12 came in swimming events with Le Clos contributing to seven of those.

Although South Africa secured one more gold medal than they did at Delhi 2010, they finished two places lower on the final medals table.

Swimming competition is set to take place between April 5 and 10 at the Games in Gold Coast.

The Games will take place from April 4 to 15.
