The leaders of seven National Olympic Committee's (NOC) from across Oceania took part in a recent forum designed to foster knowledge-sharing in the region.

The secretary generals of Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Samoa, the Solomon Islands and Tonga NOCs travelled to New Zealand last week, with the New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) facilitating the forum over five days.

The Australia Olympic Committee chief executive Matt Carroll also attended to support.

The event, supported by Olympic Solidarity funding, promoted the exchange of knowledge between NOCs.

The NZOC, supported by Olympic Solidarity, ran sessions which covered Olympic Solidarity, risk management, strategic planning, Games planning and commercial partnerships.

The forum was hailed as a success with the participants saying it will help them to more effectively lead their NOCs.

"The secretary general meeting was very motivational and inspiring with many challenges discussed," said Samoa secretary general Maureen Epati-Tuimalealiifano.

"The nature of work we deliver consists of compliance with IOC charter, our own constitution, our strategic plans and work plans, staff, athletes and national federations with many commissions not to mention equity, education and anti-doping.

"This was a great opportunity to listen to those in the same space, learn from them, and share with the group."

Nicki Nicol, the NZOC chief executive, said the idea for the forum was generated at this year’s ONOC General Assembly.

"We had a few of the secretary generals asking us the same sort of questions so we thought; 'why don’t we all get together and share our challenges and knowledge together?'

"It was really inspiring to spend the week with our Pacific neighbours, build special relationships and also share knowledge and expertise.

"We’re really pleased with the forum, which may be a pilot for similar events in the future."
