Takabatake, who in 2017 and 2020 won Pan American Championship crowns in the men's under-60 kilograms class, added another triumph to his collection - this time achieving success in the under-66kg discipline.

The 31-year-old won Pool B before defeating compatriot Willian Lima and host nation Peru's Juan Postigos to take the gold.

Undeterred by dropping to the repechage, Lima defeated Colombia’s Juan Hernandez to secure one of the division’s bronze medals.

The other went to Ari Berliner of the United States after he beat Ecuador’s Juan Ayala.

Postigos won the silver medal.

Pimenta, a two-time continental champion in the women’s under-52kg and a Pan American Games gold medallist at this venue, Videna, in 2019, bettered American Angelica Delgado in the final.

Australia’s Tinka Easton and Canada’s Kelly Deguchi won bronze in the category following respective victories against Katelyn Jarrell of the US and Kristine Jimenez of Panama.

Brazilian success did not stop there with Jessica Lima and 2016 Olympic champion Rafaela Silva taking gold and bronze in the women’s under-57kg class.

After Silva and Lima won Pool A and Pool B, respectively, they faced one another.

It ended with Lima besting her compatriot, who returned from a doping ban last year, to progress to a final versus Cuba’s Arnaes Odelín Garcia.

The 24-year-old Brazilian once again came out on top for a fourth win via ippon of the event, while Silva took down Argentina’s Brisa Gomez to secure bronze.

Mariah Holguin of the US also won bronze after beating Ana Rosa of the Dominican Republic.

Amanda Lima’s victory against Chile’s Mary Dee Vargas Ley in the final of the women’s under-48kg rounded off the successful day for Brazil.

The US claimed another bronze after Maria Celia Laborde beat Keisy Perafan of Argentina.

The other bronze medal was won by the Dominican Republic's Estefania Soriano, who eclipsed Mexico’s Edna Carrillo.

Katharina Haecker, who won five consecutive Oceania Judo Championship gold medals in the women’s under-63kg between 2014 and 2018, earned Australia's lone gold medal of the day in the same category.

Haecker fended off Canada’s Olympic bronze medallist Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard in the final to add to her impressive résumé.

Colombia’s Cindy Mera and Cuba’s Yusmari Reyes Laffita achieved bronze.

In the men’s under-60kg, Costa Rica’s Sebastián Sancho won gold, beating Cuba’s Danny Porte Valdiviezo in a final which lasted only 71 seconds.

Joshua Katz of Australia and Panamanians Timeo Tournier and Bernabe Vergara were all awarded bronze medals.

Dominic Rodriguez sealed the sole US gold medal on day one, overcoming Peru’s Alonso Wong in the men’s under-73kg final.

Canada’s Antoine Bouchard and Cuba’s Magdiel Estrada took bronze medals for the category.
