The newly-formed North America and Caribbean Handball Confederation (NACHC) has held its first Congress in Acapulco in Mexico in a hybrid format due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It follows the International Handball Federation (IHF) decision to split the Pan-American Team Handball Federation (PATHF) into two governing bodies.

Twenty-one National Federations affiliated with the NACHC were invited to the Congress, with eight member associations attending in person, while others took part via videoconference due to COVID-19 health measures in place.

All participants in person had to undergo a COVID-19 test within 72 hours of arriving at the NACHC Congress.

"The NACHC members were really looking forward to an event that would restart handball activities in our arena, therefore the Congress marked this moment and promoted hope among our members, alongside the junior men's NACHC qualification tournament for the Junior Pan-American Games," said NACHC President Mario Garcia de la Torre.

"Additionally, the celebration of the Congress promoted a great interest in our senior women's qualification tournament for the IHF Women's World Championship, due to be played in August in Chicago.

This tournament, the Women's North American and the Caribbean Championship is scheduled to take place from August 22 to 25 and will act as a qualifier for the World Championship, due to take place in Spain in December.

Greenland, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the United States are set to compete in the Championship in Chicago.

IHF President Hassan Moustafa was also part of the NACHC Congress via videoconference and underlined the importance of growing the appeal of handball in the region and thanked members for their work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The PATHF was split into the NACHC and the South and Central America Handball Federation.

In January 2018, the PATHF was suspended by the IHF after it filed an appeal against splitting its governing body into two.

Despite the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling against the IHF, they refused to stop the split, with two continental bodies now ruling over the Americas.
