A public vote is underway to decide songs to be included as part of a Festival 2018 mass karaoke event, which will form part of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games arts and culture programme.

Called the "Giant Sing Along", the interactive installation will take place on Surfers Paradise beach throughout the duration of the Games in Australia, which will run from April 4 to 15.

Giant Sing Along is a creation by Canadian design studio Daily Tous Les Jours who create large-scale interactive installations driven by collective experiences.

Their work has claimed international praise and was named the Best in Show at the 2013 Interaction Awards.

They also won the grand prize at the 2014 UNESCO Shenzhen Design Awards.

A list of more than 100 songs can be voted for by the public or, alternatively, nominations of their favourite karaoke songs can be made.

The current list includes songs from a variety of artists, from the likes of Lionel Ritchie, Elton John and Barry Manilow, through to Rick Astley, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift.

Voting will close on February 12, with the top 50 songs making the final list.

"We programmed Giant Sing Along as a fun and engaging interactive installation to get together with your friends and share in a collective musical experience," said Kate Fell, Festival 2018's co-creative director.

"Set on the beach it allows everyone to let go of any inhibitions providing the freedom to sing their hearts out.

"It's not about the voices but rather an uplifting, communal experience, the fun comes from doing it together.

"Giant Sing Along has travelled around the world and now it's the Gold Coast's turn to choose the song list, so get voting Gold Coast."

The installation will see 30 auto-tuned microphones set up, with the aim of letting locals and visitors sing in a karaoke style attraction.

It is claimed the installation offers a shared musical experience for all ages.

"This is what the Games experience is about, joining in and sharing in something you love," said Mark Peters, Gold Coast 2018 chief executive.

"We encourage all Games fans to get behind the voting to have their say on the song list.

"No matter what your age or singing ability, this will be a must-do activity as part of Festival 2018 on the beach at Surfers Paradise.

"With auto-tune technologies, everyone will feel comfortable joining in."

It forms part of the Festival 2018 programme, which will take place throughout the Commonwealth Games.

More than 1,440 artists from 50 countries will be part of the Festival, which will include 1,000 arts and cultural experiences including music, theatre, circus, dance, ideas, visual arts and film.

Two main Festival sites will be established in Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach, the latter having two distinct activated spaces, Kurrawa Park and Surf Parade.
