Three-time world squash champion Nick Matthew of England has been ruled out of next week’s 2017 Windy City Open through injury.

As a result of the 36-year-old's withdrawal from the event at the University Club of Chicago, Mexican Cesar Salazar has moved up from qualification to secure an automatic berth in the main draw.

Egypt’s Ramy Ashour has replaced Matthew as the number four seed.

Compatriot Omar Mosaad also moves up in the draw and will now face James Willstrop, Matthew's long-term domestic rival, in the first round.

"I’m very disappointed to miss the Windy City Open but it’s too strong a tournament to compete at when you’re not 100 per cent," Matthew said.

"Unfortunately the ankle has been a little sore and I just need to take a short break from playing to rest it."

Matthew said his focus is now on being ready for the 2017 Allam British Open in Hull, where action is due to take place from March 21 to 26.

He added that he is "optimistic" he will be back competing at the Canary Wharf Classic, scheduled to be held in London from March 6 to 10, as part of his preparations.

World number one Mohamed Elshorbagy of Egypt is the defending men’s champion at the Windy City Open and is set to meet New Zealand’s Paul Coll in the first round.

The tournament is due to run from February 23 to March 1.
