Marieke Keijser claimed a dominant victory in the women’s lightweight single sculls to help The Netherlands finish top of the medal table at the World Rowing Under-23 Championships in Rotterdam.

The home rower powered away during the course of the race to win the event by a margin of 11 seconds, ending in a time of 8min 16.14sec.

South Africa’s Nicole van Wyk and Mexico’s Kenia Lechuga Alanis finished on the podium in times of 8:27.18 and 8:32.74 respectively.

Amber Kraak and Anne-Marie Schonk continued Dutch success in the lightweight double sculls by clocking 7:30.32, to finish two seconds clear of New Zealand’s Lucy Jonas and Jackie Kiddle.

The final gold medal for the host nation came in the men’s eight, with their crew finishing the event in a time of 5:54.10.

Their nearest rivals proved to be Britain after they crossed the line in 5:57.26, while Germany completed the top three positions as they finished in 5:59.23.

Germany would end with the largest haul of medals but left the Championships, which received record entries of nearly 900 athletes, with only two titles to their name.

Tim Ole Naske triumphed in the men’s single sculls in a time of 7:23.37, with Poland’s Natan Wegrzycki-Szymczyk, fresh from a seventh place finish at the Rio 2016 Olympics, ending second in 7:26.21.

The Czech Republic’s Michal Plocek completed the top three in 7:28.25.

Max Appel and Philipp Syring combined to win Germany’s second gold medal, as the duo won the men’s double sculls in a time of 6:40.81.

They were followed home by Norway’s Martin Helseth and Erik Solbakken, who clocked a time of 6:41.81 to finish as the runners-up.

Italy’s Paola Piazzolla, Asja Maregotto, Allegra Francalacci and Gerogia Lo Bue won the women’s lightweight four in an under-23 world best time of 6:27.28, while the United States replicated the feat in the women’s four, winning in 6:27.28.

Marta Wieliczko, Krystyna Lemanczyk, Olga Michalkiewicz and Katarzyna Zillmann triumphed for Poland in the women’s quadruple sculls, with the quartet achieving a new under-23 world best time of 6:19.10.

The Swiss men’s lightweight pair of Fiorin Rueedi and Joel Schuerch were the fourth crew to achieve a record time, with the duo finishing their event in a winning time of 6:26.47.
