The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic champion set a new world record in the men's 50 metres freestyle S9 final to solidify his status as the most successful athlete from this year's event.

He clocked in after just 23.96sec to beat his own benchmark time, set at the 2022 World Championships, by 0.04.

The 23-year-old also won S9 titles in the 100m and 400m freestyle disciplines, 100m backstroke and butterfly, and was part of Italy's triumphant men's 4x100m freestyle relay later on the final day.

Norwegian Fredrik Solberg finished in 25.16 to seal second place before Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Ugo Didier rounded out the top three.

The Frenchman was 1.83 off the pace but the result represents the first time he has medalled in the event.

Barlaam had just 20 minutes to rest before lining up again, this time in the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay.

He was given the responsibility of going last after compatriots Xenia Palazzo, Federico Bicelli, and Alessia Scortechini.

They combined for a time of 4min 3.25sec to beat France and Brazil by 3.59 and 4.02, respectively.

There were three other world records set on the day in Manchester, with Colombian Carlos Serrano Zarate setting a time of 1:10.32 in the men's 100m breaststroke SB8.

Double Paralympic champion Andrii Trusov of Ukraine then sealed his fifth gold of these Championships with a new world best of 1:00.09 in the men's 100m freestyle S7.

A time of 34.55 from China's Jiang Yuyan now stands as the mark to beat in the women's 50m butterfly S6, beating her previous record from the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics by 0.01.
