American Jessica Long won a remarkable 37th gold medal at the Para Swimming World Championships with women's SM8 200 metres individual medley success in Manchester.

The 16-time Paralympic champion raced to victory in 2min 44.66sec at the Manchester Aquatics Centre, beating Zhu Hui of China by 3.95sec and Italy's Xenia Francesca Palazzo by 5.28.

Christie Raleigh-Crossley later took the United States' second gold on the penultimate day of competition with a 1:09.87 effort in the women's S9 100m backstroke, edging out Spain's defending champion Nuria Marques Soto by 0.23.

There were two world records set, the first of which was by reigning Paralympic and world champion Mykhailo Serbin of Ukraine in the men's S11 100m backstroke.

He clocked 1:06.01 to shave 0.65 off the mark set by his compatriot Dmytro Zalevskyi at the Rio 2016 Paralympics.

Australia also broke a world record in the penultimate final with a 4:07.71 time in the mixed S14 4x100m medley relay.

Wang Xinyi was the other athlete who set a Championships record today, recording a time of 1:15.20 in the women's S11 100m backstroke.

Among the day's other winners, Ukraine's Denys Ostapchenko won his third gold medal of the Championships in 3:19.43 in the men's S3 200m freestyle and compatriot Andrii Trusov added to his success with a 27.38 victory in the men's S7 50m freestyle.

Italy continue to top the medals table, and added another four golds to take their tally to 21.

Carlotta Gilli won her third gold of the World Championships in 4:31.49 in the women's S13 400m freestyle, and Monica Boggioni claimed her second in the women's S5 200m freestyle in 2:47.11.

Simone Barlaam's fourth title of the World Championships came in 1:00.35 in the men's S9 100m backstroke, and Francesco Bocciardo was the other Italian winner in 2:27.79 in the men's S5 200m freestyle.

China are second on the medals table with 17 golds, Wang's success today added to by Xu Haijiao in 2:22.29 in the men's SM8 individual medley and Yang Hong in the men's SB6 100m breaststroke in 1:19.40.

The Para Swimming World Championships is set to conclude tomorrow.
