World number 239 Lee fell behind 21-10 to Loh after the first game, but bounced back to stun his opponent by winning the following two 21-18 and 21-15.

Hosts the United Arab Emirates were beaten 5-0 by fourth seeds Malaysia in Group B, and two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu eased past Kamila Smagulova 21-4, 21-12 to help India beat Kazakhstan by the same scoreline.

Third seeds Indonesia played twice in the five-team Group C, seeing off Lebanon and Syria 5-0.

Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Anthony Sinisuka Ginting took 17 minutes to win 21-6, 21-8 against Lebanon's Abi Younes Christophe in their first match.

Syria were also beaten 5-0 by Thailand and Lebanon by the same scoreline against Bahrain on the first day.

Second seeds Japan cruised to a 5-0 win against Pakistan in their Group D opener, and Hong Kong beat Chinese Taipei 3-2 in an entertaining match.

The group stage is set to run until Thursday (February 16) in Dubai, with the top two from each group advancing to the quarter-finals.
