The official film of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing is in the final phase of post-production and will soon be released in China, with an international release scheduled later this year, it was announced today on the first anniversary of the Opening Ceremony.

Directed by Lu Chuan with renowned Chinese director Zhang Yimou as executive producer, and filmmaker Zhang Heping as general consultant, the film will capture the defining moments of Beijing 2022, it is promised.

This will include the Opening Ceremony, which took place a year ago today in the National Stadium.

It made the Bird’s Nest, as the Stadium in the Chinese capital is popularly known, the first venue to host the Opening Ceremony for both the Summer and Winter Olympics.

Throughout the first century of cinema, the Olympic Movement has produced more than 40 official documentaries, covering both the Summer and Winter Games.

Lu revealed that the production of this official film of Beijing 2022 began two years before the Winter Olympic Games started.

According to him, the film records how various functional areas, entities and parties collaborated closely to overcome the difficulties and pressures presented by the COVID-19 pandemic to successfully deliver the Games.

Lu had to manage the challenging task of shooting in the middle of pandemic, with a closed loop system splitting the host city into two zones. 

The film will also highlight the stories of selected athletes, as well as journalists, volunteers, medical personnel and other officials involved in the Games.

"We shot over 700 hours of footage in multiple locations globally," Lu told China's official state news agency Xinhua.

"There were many frustrations, but our team members pushed themselves with the Olympic spirit.

"I hope the stories we have chosen to tell and the faces we have recorded can leave a strong impression on the audience about the time of Beijing 2022."
