The finalists of the Beach Volleyball World Championships were decided today in Rome with Tokyo 2020 gold medallists Anders Mol and Christian Sørum searching for the only title they have never won.

The Norwegians are set to play in their first World Championship gold medal match after they beat world ranking leaders Andre Loyola and George Wanderley of Brazil 21-14, 21-18 at the Foro Italico.

"This is the moment we’ve been waiting for a long time," said Mol.

"In 2009, we both watched the World Championships in Stavanger and that’s where our dream of being professional beach volleyball players started.

"To be here, at the Foro Italico, it’s a dream coming true already.

"Winning the World Championship gold is our season goal.

"We’re having a lot of fun playing in front of the fans here and can’t wait for the final."

They are due to face another Brazilian pair in the form of Vitor Felipe and Renato Lima following their 21-17, 21-19 victory against the United States' Theo Brunner and Chaim Schalk.

In the women's event, there was more Brazilian representation with Duda Lisboa and Ana Patrícia who beat Anouk Vergé-Dépré and Joana Heidrich of Switzerland 21-19, 21-13.

"We’re very happy to be in our first World Championship final," said Duda.

"It’s a very important and special tournament for us.

"We can only thank our coaching staff, who have been doing a great job, and Praia Clube, which has been helping us a lot."

Canada’s Sophie Bukovec and Brandie Wilkerson await them in the final as they downed Germany’s Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann 21-15, 15-21, 15-12.

"We’ve set our intentions pretty clear," said Wilkerson.

"We’ve been very present and mindful about what we are working on and what our goals are for the year.

"We’ve had excellent coaching staff to help us stay in the right mindset and focus on our foundations."

The women's final is scheduled first, at 8pm local time, before the men's due to begin at 21:15pm.
