Eight pairs qualified for the round of 32 of the Beach Volleyball World Championships in Rome after claiming victories in their respective lucky loser matches.

Miki Ishii and Sayaka Mizoe of Japan won the opening match of the day by beating Atenas Gutierrez and Maria Jose Quintero of Mexico 22-24, 21-12, 15-8 to make it through in the women's event.

Claudia Scampoli and Margherita Bianchin of Italy qualified too with a 13-21, 21-19, 15-8 win over Maria Francisca Rivas Zapata and Chris Vorpahl Villablanca of Chile, as did Switzerland's Esmée Böbner and Zoé Vergé-Dépré with a 21-16, 13-21, 15-12 win against Cubans Lidianny Echeverria Benitez and Leila Consuelo Martinez Ortega.

The last women's lucky loser winners were Austria's Katharina Schützenhöfer and Lena Plesiutschnig, with a 21-13, 19-21, 15-10 triumph over Erika Bobadilla and Giuliana Poletti of Paraguay.

Youssef Krou and Arnaud Gauthier-Rat of France were the first men's lucky losers who became winners, coming from a set down to beat Surin Jongklang and Banlue Nakprakhong of Thailand 19-21, 22-20, 16-14.

Chile's Marco and Esteban Grimalt progressed too, defeating Nicolás and Tomas Capogrosso of Argentina 21-18, 15-21, 15-11.

Christoph Dressler and Alexander Huber of Austria followed with a 21-15, 14-21, 15-13 win over Italians Davide Benzi and Carlo Bonifazi.

In the last match of the night, Canada's Sam Schachter and Dan Dearing saw off the Mexican pair Juan Virgen and Miguel Sarabia in straight sets.

A bumper day is in store tomorrow at Foro Italico with the full round of 32 scheduled in both tournaments.
