Four large banners advertising the Commonwealth Games have been given the green light by Birmingham City Council, with the slogan "Be Bold, Be Birmingham" set to be branded across the Ringway Centre.

The non-illuminated wrap banners are due to go up on May 31 and appear at four locations on the Ringway Centre in central Birmingham.

The largest of the adverts given permission to go up is 14 metres high and 235m wide, stretching the full width of the Ringway Centre complex facing Smallbrook Queensway, a prominent street in the city centre.

It has a purple background and will feature many version of the letter B, in colours consistent with the Be Bold, Be Birmingham campaign.

The other banners are 14m high and 15m wide, 5m high and 20m wide and finally 14m high and 40m wide.

The latter, to be positioned across the Hurst Street link bridge, will display the message "Welcome to Birmingham, proud host city of the 2022 Commonwealth Games".

Planning permission for the banners was granted on Thursday (April 28).

It is promised they will not interfere with highway safety, and must come down within a year of being displayed.

"I can't help but feel that such an advertisement is justified," councillor Martin Straker Welds remarked, as reported by the Birmingham Mail.

"Yes, you will be able to see it from outer space.

"Yes, you'll be able to see it at night, but it will actually echo the theme of the Games.

"Be Bold, Be Birmingham."

The advertisements are due to be created from a mesh plastic stretched on top of a stainless steel wire system attached to the building.

Gareth Moore, another councillor, was more cautious and urged "I do hope it will be maintained so it does look as good as the CGI suggests because it wouldn’t reflect well on the city if it was a mess", per the Birmingham Mail.

Birmingham 2022 is due to take place from July 28 to August 8 and be the largest multi-sport event England has hosted since the London 2012 Olympic Games.
