Semi-final action took place across five men’s freestyle weight categories to decide the first finalists on day one of the United World Wrestling Junior World Championships at the Ufa Arena in Russia.

The winners of the semi-finals sealed a place in the gold medal match, with the defeated wrestlers going through to bronze medal matches against the winners of the repechage round.

In the 57 kilograms category Muhammet Karavus of Turkey defeated Manvel Khndzrtsyan of Armenia on points 8-4 in the first semi-final.

The second last four encounter saw Ramazan Bagavudinov of Russia beat Nuraddin Novruzov of Azerbaijan 7-0.

In the 65 kilograms category Shamil Mamedov of Russia beat Seyedhassan Seyedhossein Ebadimermeti of Iran 14-8.

Mamedov will face Ziraddin Bayramov for gold, after the wrestler from Azerbaijan overcame Beau Reynald Bartlett of the United States 6-2.

In the 70 kilograms category Erfan Mohammad Elahi of Iran booked his place in the final after overcoming Stanislav Novac of Moldova 8-3.

Elahi will face Dzhabrail Gadzhiev of Azerbaijan in the final, after he defeated Stanislav Svinoboev of Russia 6-1.

In the 79 kilograms category Ashraf Ashirov of Azerbaijan booked his place in the final by beating Makhambet Nurzhaubayev of Kazakhstan 11-3.

Ashirov will face Mohammad Ashghar Nokhodilarimi for gold, after the Iranian wrestler won by technical superiority against Baliyan Gourav of India.

Finally, in the 97 kilograms category Braxton James Amos of the United States won the first semi-final by beating Deepak Deepak of India 9-1.

Amos will face Polat Polatci of Turkey in the final, after he edged past Ali Reza Abbasali Abdollahi of Iran 9-8.

The finals in all five categories are scheduled to take place tomorrow.

The competition is open to athletes aged between 18 and 20.
