The United World Wrestling (UWW) Junior World Championships begin in Ufa tomorrow, after the event was absent from the calendar in 2020.

Fifty-two nations are due to compete at the multi-purpose Ufa Arena, where spectators will be allowed so long as they have been vaccinated against COVID-19 or can provide proof of a negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test.

Competition is scheduled in men's and women's freestyle divisions, as well as Greco-Roman wrestling.

Russia, the host nation, will have a competitor in each of the 30 categories.

Russian athletes figure to be a force to be reckoned with, as the country won the men's freestyle and Greco-Roman team titles when the UWW Junior World Championships last took place, in Tallinn in 2019.

Japan, women's team champions in the Estonian capital, will be absent this year.

Russia were second in the team standings two years ago, so could complete a clean sweep of the team titles on home mats.

India and the United States have both sent 30 athletes, as have Kazakhstan and Belarus.

Action is scheduled to begin tomorrow in the under-57-kilogram, 65kg, 70kg, 79kg and 97kg men's freestyle divisions.

Athletes aged between 18 and 20 are eligible for the UWW Junior World Championships.
