Mexico secured three gold medals on the final day of the Pan American Track Cycling Championships in Lima.

Yareli Acevedo added to her personal medal haul in the Peruvian capital city, following individual pursuit gold and madison silver yesterday at the National Sports Village (VIDENA) Velodrome.

She earned maximum points in three of the eight sprints contested during the points race.

This included winning the double point final sprint ahead of Canada’s Maggie Coles-Lyster, which saw the two riders earned 10 and six points, respectively.

The effort proved crucial in the final standings as Acevedo claimed gold on a total of 26 points, just one clear of her Canadian rival.

Barbados’ Amber Joseph secured bronze on 17 points, adding to her scratch race title on the opening day of competition.

"I was looking at the score table I was going in second and then third," Acevedo told the Pan American Cycling Confederation.

"When analysing the table after the penultimate sprint I said it is the last one, we are going to top it off, since it gives double points.

"I fought it with all the strength I had left and I won, I’m happy."

Yuli Verdugo celebrated her 24th birthday by winning gold in the women’s keirin event.

The Mexican sprinter held off the challenge of Colombia’s Martha Bayona and Juliana Gaviria, who completed the podium places.

Mexico’s third gold medal of the day came in the men’s madison, with Ramón Muñiz and Jorge Peyrot combining impressively.

The duo scored 39 points in sprints to secure the title ahead of Colombia’s Brayan Sanchez and Juan Arango.

Sanchez and Arango had earned 20 points for gaining a lap on the field, but finished second on an overall score of 38 after their rivals triumphed in the final sprint of the event.

Chile’s Antonio Cabrera and Felipe Penaloza rounded off the podium places on a score of 33.

Colombia celebrated a one-two finish in the men’s kilometre time trial event.

Kevin Quintero topped the podium, with Santiago Ramirez and Mexico’s Juan Carlos Ruíz earning silver and bronze respectively.

The Championships offered junior riders places at the Cali 2021 Junior Pan American Games, as well as awarding senior continental titles.
