Over 160 athletes are set to compete at the Pan American Track Cycling Championships in Peru’s capital city Lima.

The event was originally scheduled to take place from March 31 to April 7.

Organisers were forced to reschedule due to complications caused by the COVID-19.

Competition is scheduled to take place at the National Sports Village (VIDENA) velodrome.

The velodrome was constructed for the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.

Peruvian Cycling Federation President Gustavo Matus de la Parra has welcomed the opportunity for top level cycling to return to the venue.

"We, as the Peruvian Cycling Federation, are very happy with the holding of this Pan American Championship," he said.

"At the same time, we are aware of the responsibility that we have to assume and for that reason we are working tirelessly so that athletes can perform in the best way.

"We have an infrastructure at the height of great competitions, a legacy that the Lima 2019 Pan American Games left us, so we predict a quality event and with many motivations."

A total of 164 riders from 20 countries are registered to compete at the event, with competition due to start tomorrow and conclude next Tuesday (June 29).

Senior and junior riders will be competing, with the latter seeking to qualify for the inaugural Junior Pan American Games in Cali.

Cali 2021 was moved to November 25 to December 5 last month, with Panam Sports blaming the two-and-a-half-month delay on the COVID-19 pandemic.
