The International University Sports Federation (FISU) has called for organisers to be creative when designing events to mark International Day of University Sport (IDUS) later this year.

An annual event launched in 2016, IDUS is to return in on September 20.

Students, universities and sporting organisations are encouraged to host events on the day, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic potentially limiting gatherings, FISU has asked organisers to be creative in their approach.

The hashtag "#LetsIDUS" will be used on social media to promote the event.

To aid projects, FISU has provided a starter kit for IDUS events and will soon release further guidelines to help with planning.

"This past year has been really tormented and all areas of sports have been impacted but be assured that the FISU team will always try its best to support you as much as possible in these difficult times", FISU Acing President Leonz Eder wrote.

"Celebrations of this international day can take different forms such as educational, cultural or sports activities but IDUS can also be celebrated via your social media channels."

Many IDUS projects are aimed at creating a link between universities and local communities.

A fifth edition of IDUS was held last year despite the ongoing pandemic, with 135 FISU members marking the occasion with various activities, of which many were virtual.

The event is said to have reached around 3 million people in 2020, with Argentina, Brazil and Russia topping the list of the most active countries.
