The International University Sports Federation (FISU) is calling on Member Federations to nominate students for this year’s Volunteer Leaders Academy, which it describes as a "once-in-a-lifetime experience".

Open to students aged between 18 and 25 years old, FISU said it was looking for candidates that can "demonstrate a genuine interest and involvement in university sports events" as well as in sport, cultural and social life.

The introductory session is set to be held online from June 19 to 20, when selected participants will be introduced to FISU, its leadership, events and activities.

Kazan in Russia is then due to stage the main session from September 8 to 14.

The aim of the FISU Volunteer Leaders Academy is to train future Student Ambassadors who will go on to help National and Continental University Sports Federations (NUSFs and CUSFs) plan and implement projects and activities.

They are also expected to play an important role in organising International Day of University Sport on September 20.

The strong educational component of the Volunteer Leader Academy programme includes an introduction to FISU’s history, structure, sports and educational events.

Participants are set to join workshops on various aspects of university sports, including volunteer management at events, media and communications, and also get to try their hand at a variety of sports.

FISU’s Member Federations can start nominating their candidates.

They will also have the chance to submit a separate application for a second participant who meets all participant requirements, with the NUSF or CUSF responsible for travel and participation costs.

"This once-in-a-lifetime experience brings together individuals from all over the world to take part in a world-class leadership programme," a statement from FISU read.

"FISU looks forward to receiving the nominations from continental and national Member Federations."

Last year's edition, which produced 129 new FISU Student Ambassadors, was held entirely online due to the global health crisis.
