Japan’s Naomi Osaka and Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic were among the first round winners as action continued at the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Madrid Open.

On a good day for seeded players at the La Caja Mágica, the highest ranked player in action was Osaka, the second seed in the women’s draw.

Osaka was a straight sets winner over compatriot Misaki Doi, while third seed Simona Halep of Romania triumphed 6-0 7-5 against Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Fifth seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus also cruised through her opening match at the WTA Premier 1000 tournament in the Spanish capital, beating Vera Zvonareva of Russia 6-1 6-2.

Sixth seed Pliskova earned a hard-fought win against talented American teenager Cori Gauff, with the Czech player recovering from losing the first set to win 5-7 6-3 6-2.

Two more seeded players were taken to three sets in their respective contests, with 12th seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus overcoming Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia 7-5 3-6 6-1 and 16th seed Maria Sakkari of Greece coming back from being bageled in the first set to win 0-6 6-1 6-4 against Amanda Anisimova of the United States.

The remaining two seeds in action today both recorded straight sets victories with Jennifer Brady, the 11th seed, beating Venus Williams in an all American contest 6-2 6-4 and 13th seed Elise Mertens of Belgium overcoming China’s Shuai Zhang 6-3 6-3.

Women’s singles second round action begins tomorrow, while the men’s event also gets underway with qualifying matches.

The draw for the men's tournament was released today with the top eight seeds receiving a first round bye.

The top seed for the event is Rafael Nadal of Spain and he will face the winner of the match between France's Adrian Mannarino and Spanish wildcard Carlos Alcaraz in round two. 

The second seed in the men's event is Daniil Medvedev of Russia, and he will face the winner of the contest between Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and a qualifier. 

Last year's editions of the men's and women's events were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
