South Africa earned their seventh Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Women’s Championship title after defeating Botswana 2-1 in Port Elizabeth.

The hosts got off to an impressive start at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium when Sibulele Holweni scored in the second minute.

Gabriela Salgado made it 2-0 midway through the second half, but Botswana, who had reached the final for the first time, did not give up.

Thanda Mokgabo scored for Botswana with five minutes to go, but her team failed to equalise to take the match into extra-time.

South Africa scored 22 goals and conceded just three to go unbeaten throughout the tournament.

The country has won every edition of the competition, including the inaugural event in 2002, apart from in 2011, when they lost to Zimbabwe.

South Africa's Hildah Magaia was named player of the tournament, with Holweni earning the accolade of top scorer with eight goals.

Botswana's Maitumelo Bosija received the best goalkeeper award.
