Defending champions South Africa will face Botswana in the 2020 Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Women’s Championship final after prevailing in contrasting semi-finals in Port Elizabeth.

Six-time winners South Africa thrashed 10-player Malawi 6-2 thanks to a ruthless second half while Botswana edged fancied Zambia 2-1 to move within one victory of an historic first crown.

Malawi were level at 0-0 at half-time before being dealt a huge blow when goalkeeper Samir Amidu received a straight red card for a foul on Hilda Magaia who was bearing down on goal.

The hosts made their numerical advantage count in the second period, scoring six goals in 23 minutes to seize control.

Hildah Magaia netted a hat-trick, while Nomvula Kgoale grabbed a brace and Sibulele Holweni got the other.

Temwa Chawinga had levelled the game with a free-kick with Tabitha Chawinga’s strike putting her level at the top of the tournament’s scoring charts alongside Holweni on seven.

Botswana booked a place in their first ever COSAFA Women’s Championship final with a stunning success over Zambia.

Lone Gaofetoge got Botswana off to the perfect start with a superb long-range drive on eight minutes.

Botswana made it 2-0 six minutes before half-time with a confidently-struck penalty from Refilwe Tholekele.

Zambia were given hope deep into first half injury-time when Ireen Lungu played a neat one-two before curling home.

It was all Zambia in the second period as Botswana were forced to defend in numbers, but despite some close moments, including a goal ruled out for offside, they were able to hold on for an historic win.

The final is scheduled to be played at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday (November 14).
