The Powerchair Hockey World Championships opened in Italy ©IWAS

Hosts Italy won the opening match as the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation Powerchair Hockey World Championships opened.

They proved too strong for Switzerland, winning 9-5 at the Bella Italia Efa Village Sport Hall in Lignano Sabbiadoro.

The Group A match was the only game contested on day one of the tournament.

Canada and defending world champions The Netherlands will also play in the group.

Group B consists of Australia, Belgium, Denmark and Germany.

The top two countries in each group will progress to the semi-finals.
