India have named 10 players in their badminton team to compete for this year's Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast.

Olympic medallists PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal are the headline names on the women’s team and are also set to compete in the mixed team event alongside 2016 South Asian Games gold medallist and world number three Srikanth Kidambi.

Kidambi will also compete in the men’s singles event with world number 11 HS Prannoy, a 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games silver medallist, at the Games scheduled to take place between April 4 and 15.

In-form duo Chirag Shetty and Saiwik Sairaj, winner of five Badminton World Federation (BWF) international titles since 2016, will be looking to make a good impression on their Commonwealth Games debut in the men’s singles.

India’s women’s doubles team will see Sikki Reddy and Ashwini Ponappa, a three-time Commonwealth Games medallist and champion at Delhi 2010, team up in search of a medal.

Reddy will also compete in the mixed doubles event alongside Pranaav Jerry Chopra.

Ruthvika Shivani Gaade, a 2016 Uber Cup women's team bronze medallist, completes the 10-strong team.

General secretary of the Badminton Association of India (BAI) Anup Narang has talked up his side’s title chances.

"I feel we have strong chance to win the competition this year as our players have surged through the rankings and will give it their best shot at this prestigious event to bring laurels for the country," he told the Hindustan Times.

"It was tough to choose these players but after a long discussion we have chosen the ten best players to compete in the Commonwealth Games and we are positive that they will make the country proud."

In the mixed team competition India are the favourites.

They have been drawn in Group A alongside arch-rivals Pakistan along with Sri Lanka and Scotland.

The mixed team event is due to be decided on April 9 with players then moving onto their respective individual competitions the following day.
