Nearly 1,000 volunteers have taken part in a training day today as they prepare for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast.

The training took place at TAFE Queensland’s Southport campus and was part of an effort to provide specialist training alongside Gold Coast 2018.

Spectator services, arrivals and departures, workforce, venue management, venue transport and medal ceremonies were among the areas where training was provided today.

Volunteers in technology and medical areas were also among those at the campus to receive guidance, along with those in sport specific areas.

This include lawn bowls, road cycling, beach volleyball and badminton.

Gold Coast 2018 claim today is one of the largest single training days for volunteers, known as "Games Shapers".

Chief executive Mark Peters praised the commitment of the volunteers as they continue to prepare to help support the Games, due to take place between April 4 and 15.

"Our Games Shapers will be working across 24 Games locations and venues in Cairns, Townsville, Brisbane and the Gold Coast," he said.

"Games Shapers make a massive commitment to the success of the Games and we sincerely appreciate the time and energy they put in to ensure athletes, spectators, media and other key stakeholders have a memorable Games experience.

"We want to deliver a great Games and this training has been designed to get them ready for their Games time roles."

TAFE Queensland, the official training partner, are delivering a customised programme for each volunteer area.

It is claimed that 360,000 training hours would have been given the volunteers prior to the Games.

"In total our 15,000 Games Shapers have over 200 exciting and varied roles during the Games," Mary Campbell, TAFE Queensland interim chief executive, said.

"We’re proud to be delivering Games training and are working hand in hand with [Gold Coast 2018] to provide the best training possible for the Games workforce.

"This partnership demonstrates TAFE Queensland’s capability to both develop customised large-scale training solutions, and deliver training and skills to Queenslanders throughout our great state.

"Our paperless workbook model is a Games first, with all training on-campus being delivered electronically.

"This conscious, sustainability driven approach has been well received by Games volunteers, educators and the industry.

"More than 1.8 million pieces of paper have been saved by providing volunteer training online instead of printed workbooks for the orientation and role specific training.

"Following the completion of role specific training, Games Shapers will undergo venue specific training in both online and face to face environments leading up to the Games."
