Afghanistan produced a stunning display to reach the semi-finals of the International Cricket Council Under-19 World Cup as they thrashed host nation New Zealand by 202 runs in Christchurch.

The Afghanistan side were in ruthless form as they posted a total of 309-6 at the Hagley Oval.

Chasing a difficult 310 for victory, New Zealand collapsed to 107 all out as they fell to a disastrous defeat in front of their home crowd.

Afghanistan will go on to face Australia for a place in the Under-19 World Cup final.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Bahir Shah and Azmatullah Omarzai all passed 50 in a dominant batting display from Afghanistan.

Gurbaz top scored with 69, while Zadran managed 68 and Shah finished with an unbeaten 67.

Omarzai was arguably the star of the show, however, as his 66 runs came from just 23 balls.

Afghanistan's total was always going to provide a tough ask for New Zealand and their chase never looked likely of being successful.

Mujeeb Zadran was the pick of the Afghanistan bowlers with 4-14, while leg-spinner Qais Ahmad snaffled 4-33 as Afghanistan's bowlers ran riot on the New Zealand batsmen.

"Our friends sent a lot of messages congratulating us for the victory," said Shah.

"They're very happy, they prayed for us.

"Whenever it's day here, it's midnight in Afghanistan, but they don't sleep.

"After winning the game, the Afghanistan vice-president Asif Abdulla gave us a message.

"Our team spoke to him and they're very happy.

"It was very nice of the vice-president to message us."
