Canada and Zimbabwe recorded easy quarter-final victories in the plate competition to earn their spots in the last four at the International Cricket Council (ICC) Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand.

Both matches were in the second-tier knock-out stage for countries who finished in the bottom two of their groups.

The Canadians punished Papua New Guinea's decision to put them into the field by scoring 265 runs in return for eight wickets in their 50 overs, with Akash Gill scoring a superb 120 in just 127 balls for his side at Lincoln Green.

Gill's score made him the first-ever Canadian to score 100 runs in an ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup match.

Commenting on his achievement, Gill said: "I didn't really know about that record, but it's honestly a great feeling.

"When I got to that milestone, I was just overwhelmed.

"It still feels surreal to me, I'm just letting it sink in."

Papua New Guinea then struggled to get close to Canada's large total in the second innings and were bowled out for just 185 in 44.3 overs.

Canada's Aran Pathmanathan put in a fine bowling display, taking three wickets for just 23 runs in his nine overs as his side won by 80 runs.

Zimbabwe recorded a similarly easy victory over fellow African team Namibia at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval.

The Namibians won the toss and elected to bat but could only score 113 by the time they were bowled out in their 40.1 overs.

Eben van Wyk was their top scorer with 24 runs from 40 balls.

Zimbabwe managed to knock off the Namibia total in just 19.3 overs, losing only three in the process to win by seven wickets.

Wesley Madhavere was named man-of-the-match after scoring a quick 47 off 38 deliveries for his side on their way to victory, including seven boundaries.

Canada will now meet either West Indies or Ireland in their semi-final while Zimbabwe will come up against either Sri Lanka or Kenya.
