England winger Jermaine McGillvary has been cleared of biting an opponent by a Rugby League World Cup judiciary panel.

He was alleged to have bitten Lebanon captain Robbie Farah during their World Cup group game in Sydney on Saturday (November 4).

England claimed a 29-10 win over Lebanon in the match, but McGillvary was reported by referee Ben Thaler to the panel, allowing them to discuss the incident between the winger and Farah.

McGillvary entered a not guilty plea to the charge via a video link at the team hotel in Perth, alongside England head coach Wayne Bennett and team manager Jamie Peacock.

He was cleared of biting, which will make the winger available to play in England’s upcoming match against France at nib Stadium on Sunday (November 12).

“I fully understand the match review process and am grateful for a fair and balanced hearing,” McGillvary said.

“I’m pleased this is now over and can now fully focus on doing my best for England for the remainder of the World Cup.”

The 29-year-old, who plays his club rugby for Huddersfield, faced the prospect of a 12 week ban had he been found guilty.

It would have ruled him out of the remainder of the tournament.

England currently lie second in Group A, with the top three teams qualifying to the knock-out stage of the tournament.

Should they avoid defeat against France, England will be assured of progression and a place in the 2021 World Cup.

Australia and Lebanon are first and third respectively in the group, with the two nations set to meet on Saturday (November 11).

Australia are already assured of a quarter-final spot, after they earned victories in their opening matches against England and France.
