More than 150 athletes competed at the 20th edition of the Yury Potapov Memorial sambo tournament, which was hosted by Russky Island off the Russian city of Vladivostok.

The hosts were joined by 14 other countries at the competition, which is dedicated the memory of Yury Potapov - the first President of the Primorsky Judo and Sambo Federation and former vice-president of the All-Russian Sambo Federation.

The first three editions of the event involved only Russian athletes, but it subsequently received international status and was classed as an A-category tournament.

Other countries represented this year were Armenia, Belarus, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Mongolia, Romania, South Korea, Tajikistan and Ukraine.

Russia won all but one of the nine women’s categories thanks to triumphs for Olga Titova at 48 kilograms, Elena Volkova at 52kg, Aliya Bikkuzhina at 56kg, Alla Volkova at 60kg, Aiko Ri at 64kg, Galina Ambarcumayn at 72kg, Anastasiya Filippovich at 80kg and Marina Balina at over 80kg.

Moldova’s Natalia Budeanu took gold in the 68kg division as the sole competitor.

The home nation were equally dominant in the men’s categories with top honours going the way of Dmitry Melnikov at 52kg, Amyr Chadin at 57kg, Bahadir Bakiev at 62kg, Michail Vorobev at 68kg, Aleksandr Saraykin at 74kg, Anton Demin at 82kg, Ilya Lukashuk at 100kg and Gleb Geniaytov at over 100kg.

Germany’s Helge Molt claimed the 90kg crown at the expense of Russia’s Andrey Shevcov.
