Olympic champions Marielle Thompson and Frenchman Jean-Frédéric Chapuis extended their advantages at the top of the women’s and men’s overall International Ski Federation (FIS) Ski Cross World Cup standings by recording victories in Montafon in Austria today.

With just two events on the Ski Cross tour to go, the formidable duo already look odds-on to wrap up the overall titles.

Thompson, who was the best qualifier in the women’s competition yesterday, picked up her third win of the season as she overcame Marielle Berger Sabbatel of France and German pair Heidi Zacher and Daniela Maier in the final.

Sabbatel did enough for second place behind the dominant Canadian, while Zacher held off her compatriot to secure the third spot on the podium.

Thompson, who has looked in superb form throughout the opening four events of the campaign, now has a total of 345 points.

She was able to widen the gap to nearest challenger Anna Holmlund after the Swedish skier could only manage fifth.

Holmlund’s Swedish team-mate Sandra Naeslund is third on the overall leaderboard on 225 points as the top three continue to move away from the rest of the field.

In the men’s competition in the Austrian resort, Chapuis recorded the 12th World Cup triumph of his career to continue his pursuit of a third straight overall ski cross title in style.

The Frenchman, world champion in 2013, led home a one-two from his nation as Jonas Devouassoux came through to take second.

Marc Bischofsberger of Switzerland, who remains a relative newcomer to the circuit having made his debut in 2015, sealed third.

The event was slightly delayed owing to an injury to Canada's Chris Del Bosco, who topped the qualification standings yesterday.

Chapuis leads Brady Leman of Canada on the leaderboard by 97 having amassed 289 points so far.

Switzerland’s Alex Fiva is a further 15 behind in third.

The FIS Ski Cross World Cup series continues in Innichen and San Candido in Italy on Tuesday (December 20).
