Huot finished in a time of 2min 13.99sec as he beat compatriots Alexander Elliot and Isaac Bouckley.

The 31-year-old from Quebec admitted, however, he must improve if he is to claim success at the upcoming International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming World Championships in Glasgow and the Parapan American Games in Toronto.

"That's the great thing about sports, we can learn every day, even though I've been doing this for 20 years," he said.

"The way I felt today I wasn't expecting a best time but I thought I was going to be much faster.

"I'm going to learn from it.

"We are going to take it and put it in the bag, fix it and make sure we swim faster this summer."

It proved to be a successful day for the host nation as Katarina Roxon clinched the S9 200m and the S8 100m breaststroke double.

Roxon sealed the win in the S9 200m thanks to a time of 2:44.37, before capturing the S8 100m breaststroke honours in 1:24.12.

Team-mate Aurelie Rivard was also at the double as she won the S10 women's 200m individual medley in 2:37.60, as well as the S10 50m freestyle in 28.36sec.

Elsewhere, the American swimmers enjoyed a fruitful outing as they set several national records.

Haley Beranbaum managed to better her own time twice as she swam 4:06.22 in the 200m SM5 class at the preliminary stages, before she then went even quicker in the finals, posting 4:05.8, too hot for the rest of the field to handle.

Her team-mate Jesse Greve then repeated the feat in the men's 200m SM14 classification while Herendeen beat his record set last year at the 2014 Pan Pacific Para-Swimming Championships in California by a little over a second as he swam 1:14.70, earning a Pan American record in the process.

Tucker Dupree was in excellent form as he clocked in at 24.20 for the 50m freestyle S12 class, and over the same distance compatriot Evan Austin posted an American record of his own in the S8 division with a time of 29.41.

The event in Toronto, being staged at the same venue which will play host to the Pan American and Parapan American Games swimming competitions this summer, continues tomorrow with the men's and women's 100m freestyle, 50m breaststroke and 100m backstroke races.
