Meyers clocked 4min 25:31secs, taking nearly three seconds off the previous mark of 4:28:64, on her way to qualifying for the final where she touched home fist to take the gold.

"I'm really, really happy with my swims today," said Meyers, now the  clear favourite for the 400m freestyle S13 title when it returns to the Paralympic programme at Rio 2016.

"I'm so happy that I finally broke the world record in the 400 free.

"I'm excited that it's going to be a Paralympic event in 2016 and I'm glad to have the world record as we head into it."

Meyers was joined at the top of the podium by four athletes from the US.

London 2012 gold medallist Brad Snyder continued his successful return to international competition by claiming two more gold medals today and his third of the Championships as he powered home in the men's 50m freestyle S11 and 100m butterfly S11.

"Today, I was really happy with that 100 fly," said Snyder.

"I think that's a breakout swim for me.

"I think it proves that I have a little bit more strength maybe than I had in London.

"I was able to do it better here than I did at the 2012 Paralympics.

"The 50 was not quite as fast as I wanted it to be but I'm happy.

"It's good to be out there again.

"It's good to be competitive.

"I'm looking forward to bring the momentum that I'm generating here to the World Championships and on to Rio."

Elsewhere, world records fell thanks to Australian Daniel Fox and Brazil's Daniel Dias.

Fox set a world mark of 25:18sec in the men's 50m free S14 preliminary race before going on to break that again in the final when he touched home in 24:77 to claim gold.

Dias followed up his world record in the men's 50m butterfly final yesterday with another world mark, clocking 31:94 on his way to taking the 50m freestyle S5 crown.

Hosts the US lead the overall medal table so far at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Centre, with 50 medals, including 13 gold, ahead of Australia in second and Canada in third.
