Skyscrapers of_Shinjuku_08-06-12June 8 - Tokyo 2020 is predicting that winning the Olympic and Paralympic Games would give Japan a huge economic lift.

New research conducted by the bid committee predicts that a second Tokyo Summer Games would generate economic activity in Japan worth a colossal $37.9 billion (£24.6 billion/€30.4 billion) and create more than 150,000 jobs.

The benefits would be spread around the country, including regions in the north-east affected particularly severely by last year's earthquake and tsunami.

Tokyo 2020 said $21.1 billion (£13.7 billion/€16.9 billion) of the economic activity would come in the Tokyo metropolitan area (pictured top), with a further $16.3 billion (£10.6 billion/€13.7 billion) benefiting the rest of the Japanese economy.

The new jobs would be split between 84,000 in Tokyo and 68,000 elsewhere.

Masato Mizuno (pictured below left) the Tokyo 2020 chief executive, said the Games would bring "huge economic benefits to the local, national and global economies".

He added: "Significantly, the economic impact would be felt not only in Tokyo, but all across Japan, including areas affected by last year's natural disaster in northern Japan.

"We have a responsibility to unite and inspire Japan's entire population behind this national project and thereby widen the path to a better future."

The Japanese capital is up against Madrid and Istanbul in the race to follow London and Rio de Janeiro as Summer Olympic and Paralympic hosts.

It previously hosted the Games almost half a century ago in 1964.

It bid for the 2016 Games, won by Rio, finishing third behind the Brazilian city and Madrid.
