Australian gymnast Georgia Godwin announced on Instagram this week that she has sustained an achilles injury just days out from the Australian Gymnastics Championships. Godwin was part of the team that obtained an Olympic quota last year, suffered the injury while training, and will not be participating in the national championships nor the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

“This is definitely not the news I want to be sharing with you right now,” she said in an emotional Instagram post. “A couple of days out from nationals, less than 80 days from Paris, I’ve sustained an Achilles injury. It’s extremely heartbreaking.” The seven-time national champion had previously missed the chance to represent Australia in Rio in 2016 due to an injury, but competed in Tokyo 2020.

Australia Gymnastics issued a statement following her withdrawal calling it a “cruel blow” and that the organisation was devastated.

Godwin is a Commonwealth Games and Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) gold medallist and her signature move on the uneven bars is officially named after her by the FIG code of points. The 26-year-old says she is looking forward to the next steps and will return to Brisbane to work on her recovery.

“We’ll just see where we go from there. I’m not entirely sure what the recovery process looks like going forward, but I’ve got an amazing team around me and trying to be as positive as possible.” she said on Instagram.
