The International School Sport Federation (ISF) U15 Gymnasiade 2023 is set to begin here tomorrow as more than 2,000 athletes aged 13 to 15 will compete in 18 disciplines.

Scheduled to conclude on August 27, the multi-sport event will be held across the Olympic Park, UNIFA, and the Deodoro Arena in collaboration with the Brazilian School Sports Confederation (CBDE).

Apart from sport, the U15 Gymnasiade 2023 will also see cultural activities and exchanges through events such as the Fun and Skill Zone, Nations Night festivities, and Cultural Day.

The ISF Academy is also set to conduct workshops throughout the event with special focus on safeguarding in sport.

Educational activities will also revolve around topics such as anti-doping prevention, media and communication and dual career of a young athlete among others.

The Cultural Day will see young athletes explore Rio de Janeiro, which also involves presentations from participating nations.

Also called as the World School Sports Games, the first edition of the event was held in 2021 in Belgrade.

"I am delighted to be welcoming you to the second edition of the ISF U15 Gymnasiade - World School Sport Games, taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil," ISF President Laurent Petrynka said.

"As one of the most recent creations in the ISF calendar, the ISF U15 Gymnasiade is an important step for the ISF in addressing younger student athletes, providing increased opportunities for youth from an earlier age.

"The ISF believes that providing such opportunities from as early an age as possible is crucial in establishing a healthy lifestyle, acquiring, and developing leadership skills, discovering competences whilst also gaining a better understanding of the world. Hence why we decided to initiate this event format.

"This second edition will be the next steppingstone in the journey of this event, taking the world of school sport to one of the most internationally recognised sporting nations, in Brazil.

Having hosted major international sport events, we are all aware of what to expect from our time in Rio de Janeiro in August 2023; a combination of sporting excellence, and educational growth, alongside an explosion of culture and celebration in a vibrant nation enriched with a strong history of sporting achievement."

Archery, athletics, badminton, 3×3 basketball, boxing, chess, karate, dance sport, fencing, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, judo, orienteering, skateboarding, swimming, surfing, table tennis, taekwondo, wrestling, Para athletics, Para swimming and Para judo are part of the programme.
