World number six Paxton, four years Dawes’ senior, had won silver in the men’s singles two years earlier, and also had two gold medals from the 2015 World Indoors in the men’s pairs and mixed pairs.

But Dawes - who picked up a gold medal last week with Robert Chestney in the men’s pairs - has been the form player this year and there was no stopping him today, although his hugely experienced fellow Englishman certainly managed to check him, winning the second set 8-6 after Dawes had taken the first 8-7.

That set up a dramatic tie-break and it was the younger man from Blackpool who performed best as the full house and a live BBC television audience looked on, taking his first major title since the National Junior Championship of 2005 by 2-0.

Dawes had reached the final by defeating Scotland’s world number nine Darren Burnett.

Paxton’s was the higher profile semi-final, given that he defeated local hero Wayne Willgress, the wildcard entry from Norfolk Bowls Club in Norwich who had beaten three former world champions en route to that point.

But after checking the Willgress progress, his own ambition of becoming individual world indoor champion remains unachieved.
