German fencer Maurice Schmidt won the men’s épée gold medal today as action concluded at the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) Under-23 World Games in Prague.

Fresh from winning the under-23 men's foil title yesterday, Schmidt topped the equivalent épée event’s podium ahead of Spain’s Tarek Nejjar and fellow German Felix Schrader.

The men and women were separated into official medal events following a mixed gender competition, which saw Italy’s Sara Bortoletto finish in third place ahead of Schrader.

As the sole female competitor, Bortoletto took the women’s under-23 crown.

Schmidt, Schrader and Nils Neumann, also of Germany, were the respective gold, silver and bronze medallists in the under-17 category.

The 12th edition of the IWAS Under-23 World Games, the third to be held in Czech Republic, offered one of the last opportunities for the athletes to meet qualifying standards for this year’s Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The hosts claimed 32 medals in total, including 10 golds, 17 silvers and five bronzes.

Czech swimmer Ivan Nestaval was among the Games' most successful athletes, winning four titles.
