International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) Under-23 World Games Organising Committee chairman Paul Zbožínek hopes the upcoming event in Prague will help generate excitement ahead of this year's Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Athletes from 30 countries worldwide are due to participate in five sports - athletics, swimming, tennis, table tennis and fencing - during this year’s edition of the event, scheduled to get underway with the Opening Ceremony tomorrow.

Ahead of the Ceremony itself, a special event in the Old Town Square in the Czech capital will be staged, where attendees will be given the chance to try out a range of sports, including wheelchair basketball, table tennis, hockey and rugby.

“I am very pleased that the twelfth year of the games take place in the Czech Republic in Prague,” Zbožínek said.

“Since this year's Paralympics, we want to use these events to promote sport for disabled and as such, Prague is ideal.

“All preparations are already basically finished - at the moment we are in transition from theoretical plans into practice.

“Venues are ready, facilities as well, and everyone is looking forward to watching the performances of young athletes.”

Two days of classification are due to take place tomorrow and Thursday (June 30), before the sporting action begins on Friday (July 1) in athletics, swimming and table tennis.

Wheelchair fencing then comes to the fore the following day, with the Closing Ceremony scheduled for Saturday (July 2).

“The support of sport and in particular young people is extremely important,” Mayor of Prague Adriana Krnáčová said.

“Often it is difficult to bring pupils from electronics and bring them to the sport.

“The greater the respect I have for disabled athletes, who often have to overcome major obstacles.”

The annual event, previously called the IWAS World Junior Games, was first held at Stoke Mandeville, the birthplace of the Paralympic Movement, in 2005.

The Czech Republic will become the first country to host the Games three times having previously staged them in Olomouc in 2010 and 2012.

Last year's event was held in Stadskanaal in The Netherlands.
