Thailand’s Bunpot Sillapakong beat home favourite David Pulpan in the men’s table tennis open final as action begun today at the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) Under-23 World Games in Prague.

Having defeated Italy’s Lorenzo Cordua 11-13, 11-9, 8-11, 11-6, 11-9 in the last four, Sillapakong went onto overcome Czech Republic’s Pulpan 13-11, 11-5, 11-9 to seal victory. 

Cordua recovered to beat Croatia’s Pavao Jozic in the bronze medal match, winning the second and third games by walkover having taken the first 11-9.

Jozic had earlier lost 7-11, 7-11, 6-11 to Pulpan in the other semi-final.

In the women’s open, Romania’s Ioana Tepelea took the gold medal after beating Croatia’s Marija Martinovic 11-1, 11-6, 11-1 in the final.

Tepelea earned her place in the gold medal match with an 11-3, 11-1, 11-3 victory over Kazakhstan’s Zhuldyz Yerubayeva, who went on to lose the third-place playoff 5-11, 11-13, 13-11, 7-11 against compatriot Raushan Orynbayeva.

Orynbayeva had earlier lost 5-11, 5-11, 3-11 to Martinovic in the other semi-final.

Tereza Jakschova and Martin Dvorak were among the home gold medallists in athletics today, winning the women’s 200 metres and men’s shot put three kilograms respectively. 

Jakschova clocked a time of 27.92sec to finish ahead of Germany’s Lindy Ave and Vanessa Braun, the runner-up and third-place finisher in 28.11 and 30.71 respectively.

Dvorak posted a throw of 7.54m to fend off the challenge of the United Arab Emirates’ Eisa Alzbeidi, whose 6.77m bettered South African bronze medallist Brandon Beak’s 5.92m.
