Glasgow 2018_Youth_Olympics_16_JulyJuly 17 - Glasgow 2018 has established a three-person Bid Board, led by British Olympic Association (BOA) chairman Lord Colin Moynihan, for the Summer Youth Olympic Games.

Moynihan is joined on the Board by Shona Robison, Scotland's Minister for the Commonwealth Games and Sport, and Gordon Matheson, the leader of Glasgow City Council.

The formation of the Board comes after Glasgow's bid for the 2018 Youth Olympics (pictured top) was unanimously approved by Glasgow City Council at its recent meeting.

It was earlier this year that the BOA confirmed that Glasgow would bid for the prestigious event after being approached by the Scottish city and the move has unsurprisingly been fully backed by both the Glasgow City Council Executive Committee and the full Council.

"The entire city has thrown its weight behind the bid to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Glasgow," said Councillor Matheson (pictured below, on right, alongside Lord Moynihan and Dame Kelly Holmes).

"This is a great opportunity for us to build on what we will achieve at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and underline what we have already achieved through our sporting and events programmes."

Glasgow faces stiff competition from five other cities for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games with Buenos Aries, Guadalajara, Medellin, Poznan and Rotterdam all bidding for the event.

The technical bids must be submitted to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) by this October before the shortlist of Candidate Cities is announced next February.

The Host City will then be chosen by the IOC member in July 2013.

The Youth Olympic Games, credited as being the brainchild of current IOC President Jacques Rogge, is an event for elite athletes between the ages of 15 and 18.

Singapore hosted the first Summer Youth Olympics in 2010 while Nanjing in China will host the second edition in 2014.

The first Winter Youth Olympics was held in Innsbruck in January this year with the second to be in Lillehammer in 2016.
