In what is the country's first-ever appearance at the tournament, it finished second in Group F to progress into the next stage which takes the form of another round robin.

The top two teams of the initial eight groups now move into four pools before the knockout rounds.

Toko Shengelia led Georgia to the 70-59 victory at the Okinawa Arena in Japan with a game-high 25 points in addition to three rebounds and three assists.

"At this point, we're extremely happy," power forward Shengelia said.

"We're not satisfied because there are still games left, but today we're going to enjoy.

"We made history.

"This was a historical game for us.

"Our names are going to be in the books, and for this we are very, very happy and extremely proud and like coach said before the game, this win is going to be for Georgia as a whole country and for the people.

"I hope we made them proud."

Georgia now moves into Group K alongside Group F champions Slovenia, Australia, and Germany.

However, they will only play against Australia and Germany due to being in the same initial pool as Slovenia, who beat Cape Verde 92-77 also in Okinawa.

The United States completed Group C with three wins from three after demolishing Jordan 110-62 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila.

They had already qualified for the next round after the second fixture and will play Lithuania and Montenegro next.

Montenegro and Serbia cruised through Group B, with the latter taking top spot, as they scored respective wins against China and South Sudan.

Nikola Jović was deadly from beyond the arc for Serbia as he scored five from five on three-pointers to help his side win 115-83 while Puerto Rico eased to a 107-89 rout.

Spain and Brazil progressed from Group G with 85-65 and 89-77 wins against Iran and Ivory Coast, respectively, at Jakarta's Indonesia Arena.

Competition is set to continue tomorrow with the classification round that will ultimately decide which teams finish in positions 17 to 32.

The second round is the due to begin on Friday (September 1).
