Czech Olympic officials have admitted there were "unexpected surprises" in the nation's most successful European Games campaign to date.

The team returned from Kraków-Malapolska 2023 with 28 medals in all, seven of which were gold.

They also won 10 silver and 11 bronze.

"Before the games, I didn't even want to count how many medals there could be, but even I was a little surprised by this," Chef de Mission Martin Doktor admitted.

The Czech Republic had won only seven medals at the inaugural Games in Baku eight years ago.

At the 2019 Games in Minsk, the medal haul was only 13.

"I'm glad that in several disciplines the expectations of athletes and members of the entourage were fulfilled, but there were often unexpected surprises, which is nice," Doktor added.

"Compared to 2019, we have twice as many, so it's nice that the medals have also increased adequately."

Tokyo 2020 kayak slalom gold medallist Jíra Prskavec made sure of his Paris 2024 quota place with European Games gold, in what proved to be the Czech Republic's most successful discipline at the Games.

Prskavec was one of three gold medallists in slalom canoeing and carried the Czech flag at the Closing Ceremony.

Yet only days after the Games, he was heading to the white water course at Brandýs nad Labem to help conduct a coaching clinic for youngsters alongside other slalom experts Tomáš Rak and Vojtěch Heger.

They were joined by fellow European Games bronze medal winners kayaker Tereza Fišerová and canoeist Václav Chaloupka.

"Because of the motivation of the young generation, these camps are extremely important," Prskavec explained.

"It is right for children to know what elite sport is about and to be able to get an idea, when I can come and train with them, it's really nice.

"I believe that I can give them love and motivation for further work."

"It was hard because I don’t know the kids, I enjoyed that I had to alternate between honing the correct technique with really good paddlers and then explaining to beginners how to cross the current and how to lean, It was very different."

Meanwhile, Doktor was also able to count Czech progress in other sports.

Rapid fire pistol shooter Martin Podhráský also secured a Paris 2024 quota place with silver in the 25 metres mixed team event.

The women's rugby sevens team beat Belgium to win bronze and stake their spot in the final Olympic qualification event.

"You could see that they were pursuing their goal and wanted to do everything for it," Doktor added.

"It was a pleasure to work with their team."
