The Czech Boxing Association (ČBA) has decided to go ahead with the 53rd edition of Grand Prix in Ústi Nad Labem, despite the European Boxing Confederation (EUBC) urging National Federations participating in the tournament to "abandon" the event.

In a letter sent to all National Federations, seen by insidethegames, ČBA vowed to work with their legal team to solve the situation "peacefully".

The EUBC has asked all participating nations to abandon the tournament to prevent the involved parties from being "accused of violating the EUBC and IBA Regulations and be subject to possible sanctions", due to the involvement of USA Boxing.

ČBA has claimed that the statement given by EUBC is not true as the event in Ústi Nad Labem is not an "IBA (International Boxing Assocation)-Sanctioned" event but an "IBA-Affiliated" competition.

"Today, EUBC and IBA has taken the extraordinary step of attempting to destroy an international tournament with a great tradition approved by the CBA, the 53rd edition of Grand Prix Ústi Nad Labem," ČBA President Marek Simak wrote.

"In a letter to all of you, EUBC parroted language provided by the IBA to claim that boxers from the United States are barred from the competition.

"We did a detailed legal analysis before the tournament as we all want to follow the IBA and EUBC regulations.

"The statement made by EUBC is not true.

"IBA’s own rules classify the Grand Prix Ústi Nad Labem as an 'IBA-Affiliated' competition and not as either an IBA-Sanctioned or IBA-owned competition.

"As such, the principal rule on which IBA (and in turn, EUBC) relies clearly does not apply to the Grand Prix Ústi Nad Labem: 4.1.1. All Boxers, Team Officials, ITOs, R&Js, IBA National Federation staff and management must be members of and affiliated to only on National Federation at any given time and must be entered by their respective National Federation to participate in IBA-owned or sanctioned event, provided that they meet all eligibility criteria listed below and in any applicable regulations (including the IBA Anti- Doping Rules).

"See IBA Competition Rules, Rule 4.1.1.

"EUBC’s decision to interfere without any legal authority is unfortunate, and it is especially painful inasmuch as it is using its role as a coalition of member National Federations to deliberately damage us as one of its very members.

"We are working with our legal team to solve this situation peacefully without interfering into ongoing event."

The ČBA has asked National Federations to support them so boxers can "fulfill (sic) their dreams" and continue competing at the tournament and not take them as "hostages".

"We are sure that our legal analysis is right and this situation will be solved in favor of participating boxers," Simak wrote.

EUBC sent the letter yesterday after USA Boxing athletes and members were registered to take part in the event.

The tournament in Ústí nad Labem started had started on Wednesday (May 3) and is scheduled to finish on Monday (May 8).

USA Boxing terminated its IBA membership to join World Boxing, described by IBA as a "rogue organisation", making them the first and only National Federation to do so.

Mike McAtee, USA Boxing executive director, confirmed the National Federation's intentions to submit an application to become a member of World Boxing.

World Boxing is led by an Interim Executive Board comprised of representatives from GB Boxing and the National Federations of Germany, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Sweden, and the United States.

World Boxing plans to have its inaugural Congress in November with Boris van der Vorst announcing he will resign as President of the Dutch Boxing Association to devote more time to the new body.

It has pledged to keep "boxing at the heart of the Olympic Movement" is one of the five key pillars prioritised by the organisation, along with putting the interests of athletes first, and delivering sporting integrity and fair competitions.

It has also signed Sport Resolutions as an independent provider of arbitration and mediation services.

Sport Resolutions will be tasked with appointing an independent vetting panel for World Boxing.
