The ninth game of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Women's World Championship Match has finished in yet another draw to leave the two Chinese Grandmasters Lei Tingjie and Ju Wenjun locked at 4½ -4½, in Chongqing.

World Champion Ju had won match eight to level the series, in what was only the second decisive result of the series so far.

Both players made unusual moves to open the ninth game but it soon reverted to type and proved to be another intense struggle.

By the 40th move, it already appeared deadlocked, but play continued until the 59th, when both agreed on a draw.

The pair had been playing for four hours.

"Neither side had much chance, it hasn’t been too difficult for me, the score is even right now and I am happy to play like this," Lei said.

Ju insisted the match had been "solid for both".

In the tenth match, Ju, is set to play white and will therefore make the opening move.

After this match is completed,  a rest day has been scheduled before the final two matches of the regular series.

Tie breaks will be introduced if the deadlock cannot be broken.

If a result is achieved after 12 matches, the winner is set to collect €300,000 (£258,000/$337,000).

The remainder of the purse is set to go to the runner up.
