Britain has announced plans for a 285 strong team of athletes to compete at European University Championships across 11 sports.

Athletes from across 45 universities are set to feature in table tennis, football, water polo, futsal, orienteering, karate, judo, kickboxing, badminton, handball and rowing between June and September.

The first of these Championships, football, concluded today in Tirana, Albania, with Britain’s team, made up of athletes from the University of Bristol, defeated 3-1 by the University of Zagreb in one of two matches to decide ninth to 12th place.

The series of European University Championships is set to conclude an impressive 12 months for Britain at international university sport events.

The nation sent large and successful delegations to both the 2022 European Universities Games in Lodz, Poland, and the 2023 International University Sports Federation Winter World University Games in Lake Placid in the United States, where they won two golds and one bronze medal.

British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) international performance manager Marc Forrest said: "It has been an outstanding year for the international university programme and we are obviously delighted by the representation for the upcoming European University Championships.

"It is testament to the increasing engagement and participation of our member universities that enable students to access, experience and benefit from the value of our international university sport opportunities. 

"I am looking forward to following the performances of our talented student-athletes across the summer and working with members, students, clubs, Presidents and committees leading into next season in preparation for the multi-sport European University Sports Association (EUSA) Games 2024."

The EUSA Games 2024 is due to be held in Debrecen-Miskolc, Hungary, from July 12 to 24, with universities and clubs finishing in the top four of the 2023-2024 BUCS Championships.
